Microsoft has deeply integrated Bing search into Windows 11 — it appears in the Start menu, Search bar, and even Microsoft Edge. While Bing works well for some users, many prefer Google or other search engines due to personalization, cleaner results, or privacy concerns.
If you’re one of those users who’d rather not see Bing results every time you search for something on your PC, you can remove or disable it.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to remove Bing from Windows 11, including from Start search, Microsoft Edge, and widgets.
1. Why Remove Bing from Windows 11?
While Bing is Microsoft’s default search engine, there are a few reasons you may want to disable it:
- Privacy concerns – Windows sends your search queries online to Bing servers.
- Speed improvement – Disabling Bing can make the Start menu and Search run faster.
- Preference – You might prefer Google, DuckDuckGo, or another search engine.
- Clean results – Local and web results can clutter your searches.
2. Remove Bing from Windows 11 Search
By default, the Windows Search bar shows results from both your PC and the web (via Bing). You can turn off web integration using the Registry Editor.
Important: Editing the Registry incorrectly can cause system issues. Create a restore point before proceeding.
- Press Windows + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to this path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows - Right-click Windows, select New → Key, and name it:
Explorer - Select Explorer, then right-click the right-hand panel → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value.
- Name the new value:
DisableSearchBoxSuggestions - Double-click it and set Value data to
1. - Click OK and close Registry Editor.
- Restart your PC.
Now, your Windows 11 Search box will only show local results — no Bing web content or online suggestions.
3. Disable Bing in Microsoft Edge
Even after disabling Bing in Windows Search, Edge will still use Bing as its default search engine. You can easily switch it to Google or another provider.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner → select Settings.
- In the left panel, go to Privacy, search, and services.
- Scroll down and click Address bar and search.
- Under Search engines used in the address bar, choose your preferred search engine (e.g., Google or DuckDuckGo).
- Under Search on new tabs, select Address bar to prevent Bing results from appearing in new tab searches.
Edge will now use your chosen search engine instead of Bing.
4. Disable Bing and MSN Content from Edge Start Page
Even if you change the search engine, Edge’s start page still shows Bing and MSN-powered content like news, weather, and ads.
To disable them:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the start page.
- Under Page layout, select Custom.
- Turn off Content under “Content visibility.”
- Optionally, change Quick Links and Background settings to “Off” for a cleaner look.
Now your Edge start page will no longer show Bing or MSN news content.
5. Use Group Policy Editor to Block Bing Integration (Windows 11 Pro)
If you’re using Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, you can disable Bing Search integration using the Group Policy Editor instead of editing the registry.
- Press Windows + R, type
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Navigate to:
Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Search - On the right, double-click Do not allow web search.
- Set it to Enabled → click Apply → OK.
- Also, double-click Don’t search the web or display web results in Search and set it to Enabled.
- Restart your computer.
This disables Bing integration system-wide for all users on your PC.
6. Disable Bing in Windows Widgets
The Widgets feature in Windows 11 uses Microsoft Edge and Bing to show web-based cards (like news and weather). If you don’t use them, you can disable widgets entirely.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Personalization → Taskbar.
- Under Taskbar items, turn Widgets off.
This completely removes Bing-driven content from the Widgets panel.
7. Optional: Block Bing with Windows Firewall
If you want to completely block Bing from connecting online, you can block its URLs using the Windows Firewall.
- Press Windows + R, type
wf.msc, and press Enter. - Click Outbound Rules on the left.
- On the right, select New Rule.
- Choose Custom, click Next, and select All programs.
- Under Which remote IP addresses, select These IP addresses → click Add.
- Add these addresses (Bing’s domains):
bing.com www.bing.com - Choose Block the connection → click Finish.
This blocks all outgoing traffic to Bing, effectively removing it from all apps.
8. Remove Bing from Microsoft Edge’s Sidebar
Microsoft Edge’s sidebar includes Bing Chat by default. If you prefer to hide or disable it:
- Open Edge.
- Click the Bing (Discover) icon in the top-right corner.
- Click the gear icon (Settings) → choose Hide Sidebar.
You can also disable sidebar features completely:
- Go to Settings → Sidebar.
- Turn off Always show sidebar.
This removes Bing Chat from the Edge interface.
9. Use a Different Browser
The simplest way to avoid Bing completely is to use another browser.
Browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Brave, or Opera let you use your preferred search engine by default and don’t force Bing integration.
To set a new default browser:
- Press Windows + I → Apps → Default apps.
- Search for your preferred browser (e.g., Google Chrome).
- Click on it and set it as the default for
.htm,.html, and HTTP/HTTPS links.
From now on, all web searches and links will open in your chosen browser — not Microsoft Edge or Bing.
10. Bonus Tip: Use EdgeDeflector or Search Deflector
If you want to continue using Edge for compatibility but redirect all Bing searches to Google, you can use a small utility like EdgeDeflector or Search Deflector.
These tools automatically reroute Bing URLs to your default search engine when you use Windows Search or Cortana.
Note: Microsoft frequently blocks these tools with updates, so functionality may vary depending on your Windows build.
Wrapping Up
Bing’s integration with Windows 11 can be useful, but not everyone wants their search results mixed with web content. Thankfully, you can easily remove or disable Bing from:
- Windows Search (via Registry or Group Policy)
- Microsoft Edge (change search engine and disable news feed)
- Widgets (disable via Taskbar settings)
You can also block Bing entirely using the Firewall or simply switch to another browser for a cleaner, Bing-free experience.
With these methods, you’ll have complete control over your Windows 11 search experience — fast, private, and powered by the search engine you prefer.
