How to Remove Recent Files From Quick Access in Windows 11

The Quick Access section in File Explorer is one of Windows 11’s most convenient features. It lets you quickly access your recent files and frequently used folders without browsing through multiple directories.

However, not everyone wants their recent activity displayed there — especially if you share your PC with others or value a clean, private workspace. The good news is, you can easily remove recent files from Quick Access or even disable them completely in Windows 11.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to clear and turn off recent files in Quick Access using File Explorer, Settings, and the Registry Editor.

1. Clear Recent Files from Quick Access

If you just want to remove the current list of recent files from Quick Access without disabling the feature entirely, you can do so directly in File Explorer.

  1. Open File Explorer (press Windows + E).
  2. In the sidebar, click Quick Access (or Home in newer Windows 11 builds).
  3. Right-click Recent files and select Clear recent files.

Alternatively:

  1. Open File Explorer Options (see Step 2 below).
  2. Under the Privacy section, click Clear next to “Clear File Explorer history.”

This instantly removes all the recently accessed files from the Quick Access section.

2. Disable Recent Files from Showing Up in Quick Access

If you don’t want Windows to track or display recent files at all, you can disable this feature in the File Explorer Options.

  1. Press Windows + S, type File Explorer Options, and press Enter.
  2. In the General tab, find the Privacy section at the bottom.
  3. Uncheck both options:
    • Show recently used files in Quick access
    • Show frequently used folders in Quick access
  4. Click Apply → OK.

From now on, Windows will no longer show or track recent files or frequently used folders in Quick Access.

3. Remove Individual Files from Quick Access

If you don’t want to clear your entire list, you can remove specific files from Quick Access.

To remove a single file or folder:

  1. Open File Explorer → Quick Access.
  2. Right-click the item you want to remove.
  3. Select Remove from Quick access.

This won’t delete the actual file — it just removes the shortcut from your Quick Access history.

4. Turn Off Recent Files in Windows Settings

Windows also tracks recently opened files system-wide (for example, in the Start menu or recommended section). You can disable this in Settings to prevent any app or service from showing your recent activity.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Personalization → Start.
  3. Turn off Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.

Disabling this option ensures your recent files won’t appear anywhere across Windows — not just in Quick Access.

5. Use Registry Editor to Disable Recent Files (Advanced)

If you prefer a more permanent or system-wide solution, you can use the Registry Editor to disable recent file tracking.

Note: Editing the registry can affect system behavior. Create a system restore point before making changes.

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  3. Find the ShowRecent DWORD.
    • If it doesn’t exist, right-click the blank area → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value → name it ShowRecent.
  4. Double-click ShowRecent and set the Value data to 0.
  5. Click OK and restart your PC.

This disables the display of recent files in Quick Access and File Explorer completely.

To re-enable it later, set the Value data back to 1.

6. Clear Quick Access Data from File Explorer Folder

If the Quick Access list still shows outdated or stuck entries, clearing its underlying cache can help.

  1. Press Windows + R, type the following, and press Enter: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
  2. Delete all files in this folder.
  3. Restart File Explorer or your PC.

This clears all Quick Access history, including any broken or missing links that might remain after updates.

7. Reset File Explorer to Default Settings

If you’ve tried everything and Quick Access still displays unwanted recent files, resetting File Explorer can fix it.

  1. Open File Explorer Options.
  2. In the General tab, click Restore Defaults.
  3. Click Apply → OK.

This resets File Explorer behavior, including the Quick Access section, to its original default state.

8. Bonus Tip: Pin Favorite Folders Instead

If you’re disabling recent files because of privacy concerns but still want fast access to important folders, you can pin them manually.

To pin a folder:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click the folder you frequently use.
  3. Choose Pin to Quick access.

Pinned folders will remain in Quick Access permanently — even if recent files are disabled.

Wrapping Up

If recent files keep showing up in Quick Access on Windows 11, you can easily clear them, disable them, or reset File Explorer to regain control.

Start by clearing your current Quick Access history, then disable “Show recently used files” in File Explorer Options or Settings → Personalization → Start. For a deeper fix, you can use the Registry Editor to stop Windows from tracking recent activity altogether.

Once set up, you’ll have a cleaner, more private File Explorer experience — with only the folders you choose to pin visible in Quick Access.
