If you like to see what’s inside your files without opening them, Windows 11 has you covered. The Preview Pane in File Explorer lets you quickly view the contents of documents, images, videos, and even PDFs directly inside your folder window. It’s one of those features that saves time and helps you stay organized — especially when browsing through large collections of files.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to enable and use the file preview feature in Windows 11, along with a few useful customization tips.
Step 1: Open File Explorer
Start by opening File Explorer. You can do this by pressing Windows + E or by clicking the File Explorer icon on your taskbar.
Navigate to the folder that contains the files you want to preview — for example, your Documents, Downloads, or Pictures folder.
Step 2: Enable the Preview Pane
The Preview Pane is hidden by default in Windows 11, but you can turn it on easily from the toolbar.
- In File Explorer, click the View menu on the top toolbar.
- Hover over Show in the dropdown list.
- Select Preview pane from the options.
Once enabled, a panel will appear on the right side of the window. When you click on a file, its preview will automatically display there.
If the pane doesn’t show right away, try clicking the View icon again to confirm that Preview pane is checked
Step 3: Use the Preview Pane
After enabling the Preview Pane, click on any supported file to see its contents.
- Images (JPEG, PNG, GIF): You’ll see a thumbnail preview.
- Videos (MP4, MOV, AVI): A static frame or playable preview may appear.
- Documents (TXT, DOCX, PDF): The text or document layout will display directly in the pane.
This feature is incredibly useful for identifying the right file at a glance, especially when dealing with large numbers of photos or text files.
Step 4: Adjust the Pane Size
If your preview looks too small, you can resize the pane easily.
- Hover your mouse over the divider between the preview pane and the file list.
- When your cursor changes to a double arrow, click and drag to adjust the width.
A wider pane is great for viewing large images or full-page document previews.
Step 5: Turn Off the Preview Pane (Optional)
If you want to go back to the standard File Explorer layout, you can disable the Preview Pane anytime.
- Click View in the toolbar.
- Go to Show.
- Click Preview pane again to uncheck it.
This will remove the right-side preview panel and return to the normal folder view.
Step 6: Enable Thumbnail Previews (If Needed)
If you only want small visual thumbnails instead of the right-hand preview panel, make sure thumbnail previews are turned on.
- Open File Explorer and click the View menu.
- Hover over View again and choose one of the icon-based layouts, like Medium icons, Large icons, or Extra large icons.
- If thumbnails still don’t appear, do this:
- Click the three-dot menu in File Explorer and select Options.
- In the View tab, uncheck Always show icons, never thumbnails.
- Click Apply and OK.
Now you’ll see miniature previews of your files directly in the folder grid — a great alternative to the Preview Pane.
Wrapping Up
Windows 11 makes it easy to preview files without opening them. By turning on the Preview Pane, you can view documents, photos, and videos directly in File Explorer — perfect for quickly scanning through files or finding what you need faster.
If you prefer a more visual layout, enabling thumbnail previews gives you the same benefit in a more compact view. Between these two options, you can customize File Explorer to match your workflow and make browsing your files faster and more efficient.
